Meeting with JP Chan Kai Yau

We met our JP last evening!

I had called and booked JP Chan Kai Yau like last year April? Can’t remember also. I only remembered I booked him 1 yr in advance! Hahaha… I called him right after I get my AD date. He sound very “coolz” over the phone. He said he has taken down my hp no and I need not call him as he will call me when date get nearer.

Saw a lot of comments on forum about this JP. Some say he is friendly and some say he is stern. Even got ppl say he slam phone if you dun speak properly! *scary scary…. 3 month pior to our AD, about 1 week before 22 Aug 2007. I gave him a call to get his JP no for filing. He mentioned that we should not filed too early. He ask me to file about 3 days after 22 Aug, so we filed on 25 Aug, Sunday nite via efiling. The rule is :

At least 21 working days to AD AND not more than 3months to AD

* Before you access the efiling, make sure you have the ic no of both your witnesses.

I thought I booked JP Chan for 6pm for solemnization. Luckily I verified with him. On his record, he stated 7pm. Hmm… saw on forum that he note down every particulars on his notebook so he wont go wrong. In the end he can’t change my time to 6 cos he got another couple at 6.15pm that nite in town. *scary! But we are ok to change our time as long as we can get him to solemnize. The reason for us to get JP Chan is because he is elderly, a sacred feel for such a sacred occasion. Another reason is because he can speak Chinese well. The family members of both Nick and myself dun really understand English.

After the efiling, we waited patiently for him to call. Saw in forum that he will call usually 1 months to 3 weeks before AD. Need to meet him to sign the consent form. He finally call me last Monday to arrange the meet up at the fountain behind border~ his usual meeting place with couples. And best of all, he does not carry handphone. Hahaha… very traditional man.

Last evening, Nick meet me at bugis had our dinner and we proceed to orchard. We got stuck in traffic jam at the road behind borders! So panick! I scared JP Chan will leave if we are late. So I dropped Nick outside the carpark so that he can go find JP Chan first.

After I parked the car, I faster run up to the meeting place. From far, I saw Nick seated at a seat alone. There is an old man with a young ger on another table. Immediately I recognized him as JP Chan. I faster ran up (cos I though Nick does not recognize him) and JP Chan signal me to wait. Then I turned to Nick who is there laughing at me. He say I damm kan cheong loh. Both of us wait for him to finish with the lady and he walked over to sit with us on our table. He saw the form that I have brought along. He just copied our name and asked us to write our Chinese name and occupation on his little sheet of paper. He then signed our form and done! We gave him an invitation to our wedding banquet. Not sure if he would attend. He told us he have 10 over couples to solemnize on that day! hahah!

I verify with him if he will do a English plus Chinese solemisation. He switch to mandarin immediate. He say he is from Chinese school and Chinese is of no problem. He say he can do a full Chinese version. I ask if we can do mixed cos I scared Nick dun know how to read the Chinese character for vow! Hahaha… JP Chan say can do mixed but cannot 1 sentence Chinese, 1 sentence English! He say dun worry abt the vow, cos we are suppose to read after him. Hahah… in the end we decide to do a full Chinese one. I mentioned to him the reason, because my grandfather and our parents would be able to understand mandarin only. He ask me how old is my ah gong. I say abt same age as you ba. He laugh and say “I very old liao! Hahaha” It was a short conversation and he dun seem that “stern” as wat forum has mentioned. We thanked him for agreeing to do our solemnization. I also verified with him that I got to call him once we collect our cert on 19 sept from ROM. (3 day pior to AD).

It was a quick process! Cos beside us, there are 2 more couples waiting! Hahah… he more busy than doc. And he sit from one table to another. Hahaha

Some footnote: Because we saw so much on JP Chan review. I have repeated warn Nick not to be cheeky when meeting up with JP Chan. But that Nick, keep jokingly say we going to meet "Ah Chan"! He even jokingly say when he see him, he will say "Hello Ah Chan, ho bo!" Hahaha... But the truth is, Nick was exceptionally polite when he saw JP Chan last evening! He told me the first sentence he say to JP Chan when he walked up to him was "Excuse me, are you Mr. Chan?" ...Hahaha....!

Try to call him as soon as u get ur date. Its never too early to book him. But when u are closer to efiling date. Just give him a call to make sure u are still on his notebook. I saw in forum. He will jot down on his notebook for all the couples who has booked him. So before he agree to solemnize for u, he will check against his note book also.

he was my JP too.....tot he very stern but he still cracked some jokes during my solemnization....but 1 thing is he doesnt carry hp so when he was slightly abit late for mt ceremony i totally freaked out.

Puroland Ang said...

woh! It can be quite scary rite.
I also reminded him that mine is at the resturant, not at the ballroom. I scared he cant find the place. The most funny thing is he write our name and date on a small piece of "tore from somewhere" de paper. Nick ask me, later he lose that piece of paper how? Hahaha...

Lyana Lim said...

same!!! but dun worry i think he will transfer to his little book. At the ceremony itself he will refer to the little book and address us....

Puroland Ang said...

Hahah! I wonder does he change his little note book year by year! Hahahaha!!! Its would be a classic shot if the photographer manage to capture the photo of this "little notebook" Hee hee hee!

Hi Puroland, congratulations on your wedding. I must really say that you have made the right choice in JP Chan. We invited him for our ROM 3 years ago and he was great. Took his own initiative to use both English and Mandarin. Additionally, he made the day really special with his touching speech. I was fiercing fighting back my tears throughout the solemnization. Now that we're marching into our AD on 21 December this year, we have an irresistable urge to invite him for our dinner. We've always been very thankful that he made our ROM very special and significant.
