After a year or so, I do not really think enrichment class at such a young age does any impact on learning.... maybe different kid absorb differently. Because I do see her peer from GUG absorbing and learning very well. Maybe its Charlotte's character that is not so expressive... so we cant tell if she is learning a not.
Last year at the meet the parents session, her teacher commented that her class is relatively poor in term of reading. She has changed like donkey number of teacher within a year! And my question is, if only a couple of kids are weak in term of learning, it could be individual but if the entire class of students are weak, something is damm wrong with the teacher right? Anyway it would be too disruptive to change school for her now. I decided to pull her out of the phonic enrichment class from her preschool (its extra classes where parents have to pay).
After looking around comparing the prices (because i think the teaching are all different), I decided to enroll her into Jan & Elly for her phonic. I think she already knew the basic, just that she is not quite started on blending which frankly speaking I cant do much about it because I myself did not learn phonics in my schooling time.
Yesterday we brought her to her 1st lesson. She is willing to go in on her own (its independent class)... but I can see that she is not responding to teacher (when the teacher goes around and ask the kid to read out the sound of the alphabet). That is very her.... she is not very active in term of participation... After her class, I tried to encourage her to participate and answer to teacher but she just shook her head.... I guess it take time.
I noticed her such behavior from her music class. She attended cristofori for a term and every time during the class, she refused to join in group activity. After 1 term in cristofori, now we enroll her into Yamaha (classes in CC so its cheaper). Yamaha classes have even more group activities. Her 1st trial class she simply refuse to participate at all. She will stand one side and stared at the board even when the teacher tried to engage her. After the class, we tried to physio her and also understand why she behaved this way. After much nagging, she is much better in her 2nd class. She will participate a bit more. But as compared to her peers, I realized she is not really expressive. I am not sure if its good or bad. For her music class, I dun really expect a lot out of it, its more of a try and error. If she really likes it, we will let her continue in this. But if she is not keen, I am ok to stop. Because I myself is not really musically inclined. Hahahhahah
Sometimes it makes me wonder if these enrichment classes really will help a kid...because when I was waiting at Jan & Elly, I spoke to a parent whose son is 5 plus going 6 yrs old le... then she say he was in I can read for 1.5 yrs but blending still CMI... Then they brought him to Jan and Elly for assessment. That's why they put him in intermediate class (the classes do not go by age).... the parent commented that in I can read its 1 to 1 so when this teacher do 1 to 1 the rest of the kids are playing. But my question is, there are many good review of I can read as well... So is it the kid issue then? or the kid not responding well to that teaching method?
